Alternatives to Rauma Tjukk Mohair – What to Knit With Instead

The best alternative to Rauma Tjukk Mohair in our range is Strikkefeber Fluffy Mohair: a thick mohair yarn with the same 100 m per 50 g. We no longer stock Tjukk Mohair, so if your pattern calls for it, start there. Gepard Puno and Gepard Teddy Dear are options if you would rather knit with alpaca.

Strikkefeber Fluffy Mohair

A thick yet lightweight mohair yarn from South Africa, with the same 100 m per 50 g as Tjukk Mohair, so the yarn quantity in your pattern stays the same. It has slightly less mohair (78%) and a little more wool and nylon. The recommended gauge is 12-15 sts on 5-7 mm needles, which overlaps with Tjukk Mohair at 12-13 sts. For a looser pattern gauge, swatch on larger needles and check that you like the fabric. Like Tjukk Mohair it can be brushed for a fluffier finish, and it comes in a wide range of colours.

Gepard Puno

A blown yarn in baby alpaca and merino: light, airy and fluffy, with 110 m per 50 g and 11-14 sts. The numbers fit Tjukk Mohair patterns well, but the fibre is alpaca, not mohair, so expect a different surface without mohair's lustre.

Gepard Teddy Dear

A merino and alpaca bouclé with lots of volume, 75 m per 50 g and 8-11 sts. It suits the chunkiest Tjukk Mohair gauges, around 10–11 sts, and you will need more grams. The look is teddy bouclé rather than a mohair halo.

How to substitute

  • Compare metres per gram, not just needle size. Tjukk Mohair spans needles from 5 to 9 mm, so needle size alone tells you little.
  • Calculate yarn by metres. Work out the total metres the pattern needs, then divide by the metres per ball of the new yarn.
  • Always swatch. Wash and measure the swatch before you cast on.
  • Remember the fibre. Mohair, alpaca and bouclé differ in drape, warmth and surface, even at the same gauge.

See all our mohair yarns, or read the Yarn Weight Guide if you are unsure which thickness you need. Compare colours in Strikkefeber Fluffy Mohair, Gepard Puno and Gepard Teddy Dear.
